Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) is a leading public research university in Bloomington, Indiana. It is a flagship campus of Indiana University. More than 48,000 students attend IUB. The university began in 1820 as the State Seminary and adopted the name Indiana University in 1838.

History
Indiana University was founded by the state in 1820 and held its first classes in 1825. It began as the State Seminary became Indiana College in 1829 and adopted the name Indiana University in 1838. The university grew steadily despite setbacks, including a fire in 1883 that destroyed its original campus. In the 20th century, IU expanded its programs and facilities. It opened extension campuses and launched the Kinsey Institute for Sexual Research.
